CLEVELAND, Ohio – A 12-year-old boy was shot and killed in the Ohio City neighborhood on Monday, police said.

The shooting took place around 6:40 p.m., likely on Loop Drive, police said. The boy, who has not yet been identified, was shot in the head while inside a van, police said.

The van pulled into the parking lot of Kan Zaman, a restaurant on West 25th Street, police said. Officers detained one person for questioning but made no arrests.

The shooting occurred about 40 minutes after a man was shot dead on West 65th Street near Lawn Avenue in the city’s Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. Police said details of this incident, including the age of the man killed, were not immediately available.

The shootings mark the 179th and 180th homicides of 2020 in Cleveland. Eleven children under the age of 18 have been killed in Cleveland so far in 2020, one more than last year, including Anthony Hughes Jr., 15, who was fatally shot on Wednesday on his way home after a community meeting.

The 12-year-old boy was also the eighth person under the age of 17 to be shot, including the victims who survived, since November 17, including two 2-year-olds and a 3-year-old.
